Veggie Quest 2008

Even the most experienced cook sometimes gets stuck in a boring culinary rut. I'm pretty good at making my meals interesting, but I've had a bad habit recently of sticking to the same old veggies. Broccoli, spinach, asparagus, carrots, cucumber, rocket, various salad greens, parsnip, cauliflower, tomatoes, capsicum, bok choy, mushrooms, onions of various kinds ....there are a few others, but those are the mainstay of our meals. And, as the saying goes: variety is the spice of life.

Last weekend I threw in some cabbage, previously I've reignited my love affair with parsnips and discovered the delights of cauliflower mashed with brown butter. But it's not enough. I want MORE. Enter Veggie Quest 2008....

The challenge: to try one new veggie each week.

This week's featured veggie: fennel

I shall report back on my adventure with the aniseed-flavoured one, so stay tuned.

Anyone care to join me? *looks around for the veggie nazi*

Ooh, yum-yum-yum! Ta for that DG...I'll add it to the collection. The salad ideas sound brilliant too! :p

fennel is great raw in slaws, or braised with lamb and white wine.

I've just discovered the wonders of roasted brocolli. To think I'd been steaming it all this time!

Totally on a tangent but I never know whether to type veges or veggies? It drives me crazy ...
Oh and the whole baking thing - baked brussel sprouts, hated them boiled and now I love them all crunchy on the outside. Speaking of crunchy some of my spinach in my frittata got all crispy under the griller tonight - YUM!

I love fennel-it's really yummy on some poached fish (I think there is a recipe for that in the "gourmet nutrition" book.

Count me in! I'm luurvvvinnngg veges at the mo. Think it must be the cold weather as I just can't bring myself back to salad eating yet. Come on summer!

For a brief moment today I thought about going and buying some ghiradhelli for me and you and posting some down but then I figured I didn't really need or want it so you have to miss out also - sorry!

Aargh! Shelley, you can't DO that to me - give me a whiff of Ghirardelli, and then whisk it out from under my nose.
